Delhi men are competing with each other to make it a crime capital. It has become the territory of eve teasers, road romeos and goons. Every one wants to keep their score high.
In a survey, it is shown that in every two minutes a girl is eve teased. Our quintessential Delhi males may or may not offer their helping hand to any one in trouble, but their heart of gold melts at a sight of girl standing alone on road. Faster then the speed of light they reaches to accompany her.
Chalti hai kya, kya maal hai and hello madam this is how they approach a girl. They not only whistle, but also make obscene gestures and pass lewd comments. Whether a girl is of eighteen or a woman in her 50s, these men shower there love and affection on everyone.
However, they have many favorite hangouts but mostly you can catch them outside Girls College testing their vocals and reciting age-old shayari. In the buses trying hard to stand beside you, to touch you. On bus stops staring and smiling at you and some asking oh - so - original “time kya hua hai madam”?
If you think only uneducated and lower class people do so, then you are committing a mistake. Our well educated, sophisticated and well-cultured men have tremendous contribution to it. They can be given awards for their best smile, gaze and their dialogues.
They smile at us, asks for lift and sometimes even follow us as said by Nisha and Prerna student of class IXth. But Mitali a B.Sc. (hons) student says I mostly roam in group of friends to avoid such miscreants but have to hear bawdy comments when I am alone.
Middle-aged men seek more pleasure in passing indecent remarks. Old men make their prey even to small school going girls while Rich young brats do not even hesitate in offering money to a respectable girl. This is what our so-called educated men do. In spite of their well brought up background they harasses, teases girls on roads like street urchins.
It is very depressing to see that a woman is still considered as an object to satisfy lust by men. They still regard them as an entity that can be suppressed. They assert their male authority by humiliating them and dominating them sexually.
According to Sheela Gupta, a Psychiatrist, Men who harass girls, they suffer from psychological problem and seek out a strange pleasure by passing vulgar n bawdy comments. But
Mrs. Mehta, a homemaker has something else to say, Sex based films are the reason behind increase in eve teasing.
Nevertheless, whatever the reason may be, nowadays eve teasing has become a part of Delhis culture. These lecherous men are serious threat to womans dignity, decorum and to our society. Our government and police should take some serious steps towards them.
Thanks for calling spade a spade.Eve teasing should not become a part of Indian culture. To curb eve teasing ,it’s necessary that we deal the issue with a better perspective-something done by you.Only a realistic analysis is going to curb the menace of eve teasing!!!
You guys mean to say, since women in India are doing modeling, are wearing western clothes, changing their lifestyle this gives us (Indian men) right to molest all women in India.
Are you guys on drugs or what?
I agree with ”Girish” and ”Rachna” completely its really shameful for all Indian men and nothing more.
Eve teasing as mentioned by the author is passing remarks like - Chalti hai kya, kya maal hai and hello madam. In Western countries, especially Europe, such are taken as blind flirting attempts. In Japan, public groping is accepted as a way of life. In fact, it is so much so that if a girl gas never been groped in the subways, she starts believing that there is something wrong with her.
Some delusional females in India has formed groups like Blank Noise Project that is violating the rights of men who might have approached a female to start a conversation by clicking their pictures and publishing them in their website. This is making harmless men look like sex offenders, which is very bad for the society. While molestation, flashing and passing lewd remarks are not acceptable, rather might fall in the purview of criminal offence, if a man comes to you and starts a conversation in a public places by saying 'hello madam' is perfectly acceptable and the women of India must learn how to live with it.
Eve teasing is not molesting. And with more and more Indian women taking to Western culture, they must also learn to live with random public flirts who are labeled as eve teasers (making them sound and look like sex offenders like rapists and pedophiles). You can't hope to have your cake and eat it too.
Totally agree with Nitesh. Miss Pavitra Devi in tank tops and shorts who is not open to the idea of a guy asking her out for a coffee or even looking at her will end up one day parading in front of strangers, coffee in hand, saree pallu on head convincing them to marry her.
Miss Pavitra Devis will neither have it this way nor that way.
Guatemala, where an impoverished female underclass faces domestic violence, rape and torture. An epidemic of gruesome unsolved murders has left hundreds of women dead, some of their bodies left with hate messages.
Pakistan, women are gang-raped as punishment for men’s crimes. Religious extremism is targeting female politicians, human rights workers and lawyers.
Somalia, a vicious civil war has put women, who were the traditional mainstay of the family, under attack. In a society that has broken down, women are exposed daily to rape, dangerously poor health care for pregnancy, and attack by armed gangs.
Congo In the eastern region, a war that claimed more than 3 million lives has ignited again, with women on the front line. Rapes are so brutal and systematic that UN investigators have called them unprecedented.
Nepal Early marriage and childbirth exhaust the country’s malnourished women, and one in 24 will die in pregnancy or childbirth. Daughters who aren’t married off may be sold to traffickers before they reach their teens. Widows face extreme abuse and discrimination if they’re labeled bokshi, meaning witches.
Mali, where few women escape the torture of genital mutilation, many are forced into early marriages, and one in 10 dies in pregnancy or childbirth.
Afghanistan More than half of all brides are under 16, and one woman dies in childbirth every half hour. Domestic violence is so common that 87 per cent of women admit to experiencing it. But more than one million widows are on the streets, often forced into prostitution.
These are only handful countries, the plight of women all over the world is still unheard.
A glance of admiration is enough if you see a beautiful girl, but you do not get the right to lay your hands on her. Next time you do that, remember that your sister or mother might be walking on the road with some guy with a mentality like you treating them the same way you treat other women.
But there is still much to be done to further women’s equality.
Aboriginal women still don’t have equality in their communities in terms of property rights and representation in the governance of their communities, and are at a highly disproportionate risk of becoming victims of domestic and sexual assault.
Women are still being sold into slavery in the form of trafficked persons. 80% of all trafficked persons are women, who are forced into domestic and/or sexual exploitation.
Lesbian women are still suffering widespread discrimination, and face legal barriers to being able to care for their partners during end-of-life situations and inheriting property from their partners - even homes that they have been living in for decades.
There are different problems affecting women in other parts of the world. Women are raped en masse as part of genocidal wars in Congo. Girl children as young as 8 are married off in India, Pakistan and Nepal. Girls as young as 4 are subject to female genital cutting in northern Africa. Women are displaced in the Sudan. Women and girls are not permitted to go to school in Afghanistan. Women aren’t even allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. Girl children are abandoned in China. Women are forcibly sterilized in Tibet. Women are being denied access to contraception worldwide through USAID and PEPFAR, and have no way to prevent unwanted pregnancies, even when they know they risk transmitting HIV to their fetuses.
It’s pretty obvious that there is still much work to be done.
@Ekta: And, I completely disagree that the new looseness on the movies has anything to do with this heinous crime. Women have always been treated as nothing but a sex object semi-clad or clad from head-to-toe. It’s all about power. Ours has always been a male dominated culture and women are always referred as weaker sex and things are not going to improve much if this mentality goes on.
Now tell me that don’t eve teasing happen wth girls who clad themselves in churidar-kurtas and dupattas as well...it does! Don’t make that sick excuse of teasing women only when they are scantily dressed, you moralists of 21st century will do the same to any other women apart from how she dresses up...
Manish and Andy.
This is for eve teasers one who happens to read this.......don disturb the girls who disagree with ur behavear , there are girls for that. That too don show ur heroism in public places lik bus , office educational institutes and all other public places. There are night clubs , disco’s and all such places were the girls over there wil accept all of ur’s too.... , pls don mis behave in public places. And disturb us. There are good girls to in this world.

Why do Indian men harass women? Everyone has a theory, but I suspect that the root of the problem is that women’s lives are changing. Women are increasingly venturing out of the home, taking jobs, wearing Western clothes, going to college. Many Indian men feel threatened by this, and sexual harassment is the easiest way to put a woman in her place, or as Gupta puts it, ”to assert their traditionally unquestioned male rights.”
Its a shame Indian men are forgetting they too have a wife, sister, mother in their houses. One of the incidents that happened in Mumbai last year on New year’s eve has really put all Indian man to shame.
